Public Safety PDF Print E-mail

We live in an urban environment, which increases the chances of crime and the need for emergency response, be it police, fire, or EMS calls.  I want our 9th Ward neighborhoods to be safe.  Specifically:

  • I want to ensure that our children can walk down our streets without their parents worrying about their safety.
  • I want our merchants and business owners not to be concerned about threats to their activities.
  • I want responsive, courteous, pro-active public safety professionals.

Opening lines of communication

In an effort to ensure an open line of communication between 9th Ward residents and the Police Department the focus of the first 9th Ward Town Hall meeting will on public safety and communication.  This forum will give residents an opportunity to meet the Problem Solving Team officers assigned to the PST beats 604 (Officer Napier) & 603 (Officer Whitehead), learn how to establish a Neighborhood Watch, find out ways to protect yourself, your family and your property, and the most productive ways to help the Police help us.

Neighborhood Watches (NW)

NWs result in neighbors looking in on neighbors, acting as one to promote better security on the block and on the street.  The Police need our help and establishing a NW is one of the most productive means to stop crime in your neighborhood.   9th Ward resident Andres Lopez ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) is available to assist you in working with the Police Department to establish a Neighborhood Watch in your area.  A list of NWs in the 9th Ward can be found under the Networking link on the home page.

The Citizen Police Academy is a 12-week program designed to give the participants a working knowledge of the Evanston Police Department. 1. Another aspect of public safety is our need to reduce our exposure to toxic chemicals, which are shockingly abundant in everyday consumer products. The great news is that the new director of the EPA is committed to revising federal law to recognize these hazards. As Evanston moves toward adoption of a Green Building Ordinance, I hope we will stay in touch with the work being done by the new EPA and by the Environmental Working Group to strengthen regulation of toxic substances.
